UNESCO Creative City

Košice - Creative City

The UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN) was created in 2004 to promote cooperation with and among cities that have identified creativity as a strategic factor for sustainable urban development. The 246 cities which currently make up this network work together towards a common objective: placing creativity and cultural industries at the heart of their development plans at the local level and cooperating actively at the international level. UNESCO Creative Cities specialize in one of the following domains : Crafts and Folk Art, Design, Film, Gastronomy, Literature, Media Arts or Music.

In October 2017, Košice joined the UNESCO Creative Cities Network in the field of media arts. At that time, they became part of the club together with 64 cities from all over the world and thus participated in expanding the network to the current 246 Creative Cities grouped in seven clusters such as Gastronomy, Design, Crafts and Folk Art, Music, Literature and the above mentioned Media Arts.

Košice is the first Slovak city to become a UNESCO Creative City. Thanks to this, the city can broader its visibility on a global level, develop international cooperation and create opportunities for creative people not only from Košice, but also from all over Slovakia.

The application for the UNESCO Creative Cities Network was prepared by the non-profit organization Creative Industry Košice (CIKE). "Since 2013, when we first set ourselves the goal of becoming a member of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network at Masterplan for the Creative Economy, we have taken a number of steps that have led to success. Now we are looking forward to the work associated with fulfilling the activities that we proposed in the application, "says Michal Hladký, director of CIKE.

For Košice, the intersectoral collaboration of creative industry and IT is an organic culmination of more than a decade of effort, hence membership in the field of Media arts is natural. The given connection, and artistic & technological overlaps are also visible at the key event, which CIKE organizes yearly as part of its media art activities – at the Art & Tech Days festival.
