One of the main pillars of UNESCO is the promotion of free access to information, freedom of speech, protection of journalists and the development of ICT technologies. UNESCO Communication and Information Sector is actively engaged in topics such as freedom of the press, media literacy, management of archives and libraries, or freedom of expression on the Internet.
Some of the most important programmes of this UNESCO sector are the International Programme for the Development of Communication - IPDC and the Information for All Programme IFAP, of which Slovakia is an active member. Among other things, the Communication and Information Sector is also devoted to the digitalization and dissemination of valuable documentary heritage through the Memory of the World programme.
